City of Bells

CITY OF BELLS: An adaptation of Allen Ginsberg's Poetry
Directed and Devised by Rachel Bowditch

Presented at HERE Performance Art Center, New York City. March 2000.

City of Bells is a three-dimensional exploration of the poetry of Allen Ginsberg. Through theater, poetry, dance, music, art, and magic, we wove a collage of “images juxtaposed”. Framing the script around his famous poems Howl and Kaddish among other poems, we created a fictional universe that explored homelessness, addiction, schizophrenia, and the American Dream. This piece aimed at reality through theatricality, shedding a new light onto a world we tend to label as dark. “A yellow paper rose twisted on a wire hanger in the closet and even that imaginary, nothing but a little bit of hallucination."--Ginsberg.

"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked..."--Ginsberg.

“Difficulties are not mastered by keeping silent about them." --Brecht.
